2. Potential risks

Streaming platforms may expose young people to inappropriate or offensive content that is:

  • violent
  • sexual
  • extremist or harmful

While most platforms set the minimum age requirement at 13, this does not guarantee that the content will be suitable for that age group.

Algorithms suggest content related to a user’s previous searches or interactions on a platform. Thumbnail images and video titles can include inappropriate images that bypassed content filters. Some comment sections are ineffectively moderated, exposing young people to abusive or explicit messages.

Repeated exposure to inappropriate or extreme content can desensitise young people. This can make them more likely to seek out or engage with similar material in the future.

Live streaming platforms often include:

  • real-time interaction through live chats
  • private messaging

These can create a sense of community and shared interest. However, predators can exploit this presenting significant risk of:

The nature of real-time interactions can also lead to impulsive actions. These include oversharing personal information or responding emotionally to provocations. This can make young people targets for scams or inappropriate contact.

Streaming platforms can influence young people’s behaviour. Some content creators engage in extreme or unsafe actions to gain attention, followers or donations. These can range from dangerous stunts to promoting unhealthy lifestyles, which young people may try to emulate.

Livestreaming and live chat can encourage spontaneous and impulsive behaviour. Young people may inadvertently reveal personal or identifying information. This could include their location or school, putting their safety and privacy at risk.

Emotional responses during live interactions can also lead to regrettable actions, such as:

  • responding poorly to criticism
  • engaging with trolls

Streaming platforms are designed to maximise user engagement. It can be difficult to disengage from these platforms because of features like:

  • autoplay
  • notifications
  • endless scrolling

This can lead to excessive screen time.

Streaming can pose financial risks for young people. Many platforms offer in-app purchases, subscriptions and exclusive features. Streamers may request donations or promote products using persuasive tactics such as:

  • time-limited offers
  • emotional appeals
  • promises of exclusive interactions

Repeated exposure to these requests can:

  • encourage unhealthy spending habits
  • normalise financial contributions as necessary for inclusion or recognition within online communities
