1. Social media

Social media platforms are digital spaces where users can connect, share and discover content, and interact through features like:

  • posts
  • videos
  • direct messages
  • live streams

Social media is particularly appealing to young people because of its dynamic and interactive nature. Many platforms offer bite-sized, engaging content, as well as tools for self-expression such as creative filters, stickers and editing features. Direct messaging (DM) tools allow for private conversations with online friends.

Age ratings ensure that users are exposed to content suitable for their age. They also help parents and carers make informed decisions about the social media apps their children can use.

Most social media platforms have a minimum age requirement of 13. However, enforcement of these age restrictions is rarely vigorous.

Parents and carers should be aware that while these platforms have age limits many younger children use them, with or without parental supervision.

Social media plays a central role in the lives of children and young people. It offers a mix of entertainment, social connection and opportunities for self-expression.

Features such as photos, videos, stories, direct messaging and group chats make it easy to stay in touch with friends and other people in their lives.

Trends, challenges, filters and effects allow users to personalise content and express creativity.

Users can also choose the type of content that they search for and engage with. This then feeds into their algorithm so once they watch, like or share content they will be more likely to see similar content in the future.
